The Alchemist’s Aid.
He was a great alchemist. All his former colleagues acknowledged it, and he himself knew it to be true. Beyond that, there was objective reality: he had lived an extraordinarily long life. He had witnessed the legendary Nicolas Flamel, been acquainted with Paracelsus, Cagliostro (Giuseppe Balsamo), and Felix Yusupov. None of them were alive now; nor could it be said that any of those worthy individuals had even crossed the century mark. But the Alchemist was still in full possession of his wits, his memory was solid, and his health was decent. His joints ached when the weather turned… but people and alchemy still interested him as much as ever.
Despite the changing of eras, the dissolution of the Inquisition, and the fragmentation of unified science into chemistry, physics, biology, and others, the Alchemist continued to believe in alchemy alone. After all, he reasoned, to study the constituent parts is to lose sight of the whole. The world is integral, and that cannot be changed. Yet humanity’s ability to accept the world as it is gets lost the deeper one delves into details.
What astonishing creatures people are, the old scholar thought. I have lived for nearly an eternity… and yet they keep rushing more and more, never managing to truly understand anything. Not even enough to fulfil their own purpose. Let alone to learn how to wish properly…
For nearly an eternity, people or, as he called them, guests had come to him for help. And the Alchemist always began with a leisurely, heartfelt conversation. He had long ago concluded that in the hustle and bustle of daily life, the main affliction had gone unnoticed: people had forgotten how to communicate. Far too often, any interaction began with force, a demand or a threat. Even making a simple request had become a problem. Perhaps because the guest often did not understand their own true desires?
Take the recent visitor: a beautiful, wealthy woman who came seeking a love potion. She refused to tell or listen to anything.
"Just give it to me," she said. "I’ll pay well, right now."
It took tremendous effort to slow her down and get her talking. Some village witches had told her that her common-law husband had been bewitched and stolen away, and that she herself had been cursed. In the early twenty-first century, who else would you consult but witches? Looking at the woman, one might indeed think only a love spell could explain why her partner hadn’t proposed in three years, why he didn’t answer calls, and why he’d been missing for three days. She had everything going for her: youth, grooming, income. And the woman who supposedly stole him and cast the curse was right there, circling nearby. She worked with the so-called husband, they went to lunch together, she even visited their home, right in front of the wife. Naturally, the Alchemist’s guest was on edge. She was afraid to have a heart-to-heart with her partner, afraid she’d lose her temper, scream, and ruin whatever good was left in their relationship. What was left, besides shared domesticity? And why did she need a love potion specifically? Because she hadn’t heard a compliment or received a gift in ages. She supported herself, certainly, but as they say, attention is precious. What she wanted was mutual care.
While the guest opened up, the Alchemist plied her with tea, checked some tables, made calculations, and asked clarifying questions. Could her husband be on a business trip? Then why hadn’t he told her, and why wasn’t he answering his phone? Had this happened before? Check your phone; what if he’s written while we’re talking? Is your phone on now? Then turn it on! Immediately, calls started pouring in from her beloved:
"Where did you disappear to? Where do I pick you up? Why have you been unreachable? Did something happen?" The excited male voice reached the scholar from across the room.
"So, do you still need a love potion?" He smiled gently. "I would advise something else instead. A remedy for harmonizing the world around you. Wait a moment, I’ll prepare a mixture for you."
And what was he supposed to say to her? A sedative? Have you ever seen a truly frayed person calm down just because someone told them to? Are they crazy? No, he had to mention some unique ability she needed. Then there was a chance she would follow his recommendations.
"A few drops in your morning coffee. Do you drink tea? You can add it to tea too. And say an affirmation three times while you drink. Do you pray? Then you can use a short prayer instead of an affirmation. And be sure to talk to your husband on your mutual day off about what’s bothering you. You’ve tried and it didn’t work? That was without the harmonizing remedy. Now, with the proper morning tea, everything will work out."
"But what about the curse?" the happy and calmed guest asked at the door.
"There’s no curse anymore. You cursed yourself while you were spinning all those negative thoughts in your head. I’ve cleansed it all." With sadness, the Alchemist realized she had only heard the last sentence.
For all of his "nearly eternity" of life, the old scholar had observed changes. States changed, as did the methods of influencing people’s minds. Once there was paganism, then the major religions came to replace it: Buddhism, Christianity, Islam-bringing with them intolerance toward one another and witch hunts. After that, the state separated from all confessions and became secular.
Once, people spoke openly about what was good and what was evil. And there was not such a great difference in what you called it, commandments or ideology. That was what the Alchemist believed. He saw that a person of any era needed to believe in something higher reason, forces, justice, a being… Something that would explain the laws of karma in their destiny and relieve them of at least some responsibility.
A man had recently come to him, complaining of failures in business. He was convinced that someone had cast the evil eye or cursed him. Because there existed some higher power that knew the secret of successful trades. And that very secret would lift the crown of failure from him, an unlucky trader on the stock exchange. Unlike the vast majority of guests, this one didn’t want to know who had cursed or hexed him; he didn’t want revenge. He hoped only for healing. After all, at the beginning of the century, everyone had been taught to set goals, map out the path to them, and achieve them. So this guest knew exactly what he needed: just three good trades on the exchange. Then he would win back his losses, earn money, invest properly, and be able to secure sufficient passive income.
The Alchemist had evolved too, along with life itself. He mastered new technologies: phones, computers, artificial intelligence. From time to time, he received a thoroughly academic education, to sum up the discoveries of a century, and more recently, of a generation. He had studied the core sciences several times over, physics, chemistry, biology, but also economics, medicine, programming… He read countless books and retained his clarity of mind and his desire to comprehend the world in its wholeness. Yet the more he studied sociology, political science, psychology, and even pedagogy, the more he understood: human beings already know the answers to all questions. It is laziness that prevents them from acquiring enough knowledge to fuel their intuition. To build a sturdy house, you first need a foundation. The habit of beginning treatment with a conversation remained; only the topic had changed.
"Where did you learn trading?" he suddenly asked the guest, frowning.
"At some courses," the man replied, taken aback.
The Alchemist moved to his table of flasks, where colorful liquids bubbled, turned to vapor, heated up, and sometimes exploded with a pop. Distillation apparatuses stood to the right of the table, and inside them, something was also happening.
"I will prepare a remedy for you… for luck… And in the meantime, tell me step by step what you need to know to place a trade," the Alchemist commanded. "The serum of knowledge takes a long time to mature. It’s important to remember everything and say it aloud; with the liquids, the information will go where it needs to. Speak!"
"Well…" The guest hesitated for a moment. "You need to know the condition and correlation of the world’s major economies-America, Europe, Britain, Japan…"
"What do you mean ‘Europe’? How do you assess the state of an economy? More detail, please," the Alchemist interrupted sharply. His suspicion, that the trader was not verifying enough before his trades, was being confirmed. He himself moved along the tables, crouched and stood up, spun in place, and muttered something over the flasks. His actions most resembled a complex shamanic ritual.
"Well, the Eurozone indicators… And, of course, the major countries within it… Germany, France, Italy… Economic calendar indicators, they come out regularly, things like… GDP, inflation, government debt, unemployment…" The guest clearly hadn’t expected to be examined on trading.
"You glance at the calendar, and that’s enough? Even I know you have to look at indicators in their dynamics and see the big picture," the Alchemist taunted, pouring liquids, measuring them, and mixing them. Yes, of course, there was an element of luck on the stock exchange. But a trader must do his job thoroughly and regularly.
"Of course, I keep tables with dynamics all the time… And there are also expected indicators and actual ones, and the market reacts violently to any mismatch," the guest’s thoughts seemed to be groping in the right direction.
"The higher powers are complaining about you!" The Alchemist shook a flask containing a poisonous yellow liquid. "They say you don’t analyze your mistakes. Why should they do you any favors?" He looked at the trader with all the severity he could muster.
"Listen to the speeches of those in power… Expectations play a role there too," the man continued, as if reciting something memorized. "And I didn’t check that. I also didn’t look at the quotes of relevant companies… And exchange rates also have a big impact…"
"What must you do with them?" the Alchemist asked, seeing that the guest was now thoroughly frightened.
"Compare them… To understand how economies relate to each other, which is stronger now and in what way… I’ve got it!" The trader jumped up.
"Where do you think you’re going?" the scholar stopped him sternly. "The process is set in motion; it cannot be stopped. Analyze right now, out loud—what are your main mistakes?"
More than an hour passed before the trader drank the luck potion and, happy and inspired, rushed off to work on his errors. The Alchemist leaned back in his chair and muttered under his breath:
"Maybe it is a placebo. But if it helps… why not? Except… why has my remedy for joint pain stopped working? Now that is a genuinely interesting question…"
