An Incident at the Confectionery. Происшествие в кондитерской

Глава 1

"Beatty’s Sweets" was located on the corner of two avenues, its divine aromas beckoning passersby from the street. It was simply impossible to walk past without stopping in for a cup of hot chocolate with a bun or any other pastry of your choice. The owner himself, Beatty McGregor, always greeted his customers warmly, and he made it a tradition to give children candy as a gift with their orders. All the local children were well aware of this habit and looked forward to the treat as a given.

With Christmas approaching, there was a flood of orders, and Beatty worked tirelessly from early morning until late at night alongside his assistants, mostly members of his own family, baking cakes, pastries, and other sweet desserts.

***

Unknown to the humans, directly beneath Beatty’s shop was another confectionery: "Mickey & Mavus," a bakery just as popular among the subterranean burrowing residents. Two mouse brothers worked hard there, handling a mountain of Christmas orders from sweets-loving visitors.

They also had a younger brother named Moni, the baby of the family. He was always underfoot, and his older brothers often grumbled at him.

"Moni, why don't you go play with the other mice?" Mickey would say irritably. "We don't have time to look after you," added Mavus. "We have so much to do!" "Stop getting under our paws," the brothers would chorus.

Moni had no choice but to follow their advice. At first, he wandered around the vicinity of the bakery, but there were no other youngsters to play with. Then, he had an idea: he would climb to the surface to see what was happening up there. The adult mice had strictly forbidden him from going up, but his natural curiosity and mischief won out over their rules.

***

When Moni reached the surface, he was surprised to see people in chef's hats and aprons rushing about, baking all kinds of pies and sweets.

"Well, look at that," the little mouse thought. "It’s exactly the same as downstairs, only the people are enormous. I need to hide, or I’ll be trampled by accident".

No sooner had he thought this than a giant boot nearly crushed him. He bolted from the kitchen and, without quite realizing it, found himself in the customer area, where more people were walking about. In a panic, he spotted a counter and scrambled up to the top. There sat a heart-shaped mug that smelled heavenly. Without a second thought, the little guy climbed inside and fell fast asleep.

***

"Thank you for your purchase, kids," Beatty said to his young customers. "Here is some delicious candy as a gift".

Out of habit, the owner reached into the candy mug on the counter, but instead of sweets, he felt something warm and soft. “Hmm, that’s strange,” Beatty thought. He peeked inside and recoiled in surprise. Sitting among the candies was a fluffy white mouse, which gave a quiet squeak.

Beatty’s expression must have betrayed his confusion, because the children started asking, "What’s in the mug?"

Beatty didn't know how to react. He knew that having mice in the shop meant violating health codes, but this little white mouse was just so adorable, and it clearly loved sweets just as much as anyone.

"Oh, this is my assistant. Everyone, meet him!" Beatty finally managed to say, pulling the mouse out of the mug.

Dozens of eyes turned toward the counter to see what was happening. The children began to pet the mouse and offer him all sorts of treats. Moni noticed that the people were treating him kindly, so, in return, he began performing adorable tricks with his little paws. He felt a special fondness for Beatty, the shop owner, and the customers laughed good-naturedly at the sight of the white mouse. Suddenly, Moni felt wanted and welcomed as a guest in the confectionery.
