The Abyss.
The Abyss
Salty tongues, churning up foam, greedily licked at her feet, washing away the footprints in the sand, dousing the shore with sea-coolness. The sun, delicate, with its final rays, caressed the surface of the serene waves. Step by step, she timidly approached the silhouette bent at the water’s edge.
“I’ve been waiting for you.” The velvet baritone merged with the whisper of the waves.
“I’m here.” She smiled, trying to hide the onrush of tears. “It’s so beautiful!”
“It’s still you. Will you help?”
“You know I’m a terrible architect.”
The castle was marvelous. Every curve told its own story. The city of illusions came alive in his hands. By the Gothic arch sat sand-sculpted merchants. The artisan quarters, tracing perfectly straight lines, converged on the central citadel, above which a magnificent castle towered proudly.
“Do you like it?”
“You look at it, and time carries you straight to the Middle Ages. You created an entire world.”
“Every morning I come out to the shore, gazing, feeling them through their thoughts. But the wave is merciless, just like the cycle of time. No matter what you leave in the sand, the tongues of the tide will carry it away into the blue abyss.”
“Then why do all of this?”
Blue sapphires, having glanced away from the sand city, peered into her eyes with curiosity, trying to read her thoughts. They tore off her mantles, baring her feet.
“I watch. I enjoy it. And I carry away the memories, so that I can return and rebuild everything again. So why come back?”
“But aren’t we fine here, in this cozy, quiet place, away from everyone? You just answered your own question.”
“No. I can’t understand why you keep tormenting yourself.”
“How was your last day?” the girl blurted out, wanting to avoid an awkward question.
“The same as the one before. And the one before that. And all the others. I build.”
“I miss you.”
“I understand. But this can’t go on. You’re destroying yourself. One fine day, you won’t come back.”
“I don’t want to.”
“You have to! Run! Run faster!”
The metallic howl of the siren split the heavens like thunder. A colossal wave, eclipsing the crimson disk, rushed toward the shore. The barren sand trembled under the onslaught of the elements.
She turned back. Cast one final glance. He sat motionless, willing to share the fate of his micro-world. Salty waves flooded the barren abyss vanishing from under her feet. She made it. This time, she made it.

“Transmission ended.” The metallic voice screeched on repeat. The siren’s wail was the pulse hammering at her temples.
The first step came with difficulty. The cold of the lifeless metal burned her soles, sending a ripple of goosebumps across her body.
“So, how are you doing? Come on, hurry up, pack it in, let’s get the hell out of here!” Jimm swooped in, wrapping his snow-white body in a blanket. “You’ve exceeded every allowable parameter. Have you lost your mind?”
“Thank you,” she whispered, barely audible.
“There you go again! You’re absolutely nuts!”
“I’m fine!”
“You’ll be fine when the teleporter hauls us out of this galaxy. Damn place!”
“I saw him.”
“Yeah, your brain’s definitely leaking. The Abyss is for relaxation, not for reanimating dead guys and projecting memories. This isn’t some virt-belt game.”
“Listen,” she said, fastening her morphing bracelet, which wrapped her body in a cryo-suit for a moment. She finally looked at the guy. “What’s with all the negativity?”
“Where’s the negativity?” Jimm grinned. “I’m positively telling you—you’re screwing up!”
“So what if I let my memories run wild once or twice?”
“This is going to be our little secret. A secret this big.” The guy spread his arms wide, as if trying to embrace the unembraceable.
She tried to muster a smile, a twist of her lips. The memories sitting deep inside her beckoned her back to the Abyss, to the shores of Sirius, to where he had remained for centuries, the Arch-body, the founder of new worlds, who had renounced his physical form, unwilling to step beyond the boundaries of his own consciousness.
Each time, carrying away the image of a new sandcastle in her memory, she was surprised to encounter familiar landscapes in the halls of galaxies that beckoned with their mystery. Then, from within cyberspace, she would watch as chaos, like a wave, incinerated familiar civilizations. And which of us truly lives in the virtual world? Where do the boundaries lie and do they even still exist, in this great game called life?
