Будут ласточки виться в синей дали;
Белой пеной вскипит весна на ветвях;
Защебечет с ограды, песней звеня;
"There Will Come Soft Rains" (Flame and Shadow)
(War Time)
There will come soft rains and the smell of the ground,
And swallows circling with their shimmering sound;
And frogs in the pools singing at night,
And wild plum-trees in tremulous white;
Robins will wear their feathery fire
Whistling their whims on a low fence-wire;
And not one will know of the war, not one
Will care at last when it is done.
Not one would mind, neither bird nor tree
If mankind perished utterly;
And Spring herself, when she woke at dawn,
Would scarcely know that we were gone.
Прозрачен, словно сон;
Молчанье лес хранит;
Winter Dusk
(Flame and Shadow)
I watch the great clear twilight
Veiling the ice-bowed trees;
Their branches tinkle faintly
With crystal melodies.
The larches bend their silver
Over the hush of snow;
One star is lighted in the west,
Two in the zenith glow.
For a moment I have forgotten
Wars and women who mourn--
I think of the mother who bore me
And thank her that I was born.
Joy
(Love Songs)
I am wild, I will sing to the trees,
I will sing to the stars in the sky,
I love, I am loved, he is mine,
Now at last I can die!
I am sandaled with wind and with flame,
I have heart-fire and singing to give,
I can tread on the grass or the stars,
Now at last I can live!
Debt
(Love Songs)
What do I owe to you
Who loved me deep and long?
You never gave my spirit wings
Or gave my heart a song.
But oh, to him I loved,
Who loved me not at all,
I owe the open gate
That led through heaven's wall.
Не знает;
Встаёт;
Like Barley Bending
Like barley bending
In low fields by the sea,
Singing in hard wind
Ceaselessly;
Like barley bending
And rising again,
So would I, unbroken,
Rise from pain;
So would I softly,
Day long, night long,
Change my sorrow
Into song.
Во тьме ночной;
Им нипочём;
Stars
Alone in the night
On a dark hill
With pines around me
Spicy and still,
And a heaven full of stars
Over my head,
White and topaz
And misty red;
Myriads with beating
Hearts of fire
That aeons
Cannot vex or tire;
Up the dome of heaven
Like a great hill,
I watch them marching
Stately and still,
And I know that I
Am honored to be
Witness
Of so much majesty.
The Net
I made you many and many a song,
Yet never one told all you are--
It was as though a net of words
Were flung to catch a star;
It was as though I curved my hand
And dipped sea-water eagerly,
Only to find it lost the blue
Dark splendor of the sea.
The Wine
I cannot die, who drank delight
From the cup of the crescent moon,
And hungrily as men eat bread,
Loved the scented nights of June.
The rest may die--but is there not
Some shining strange escape for me
Who sought in Beauty the bright wine
Of immortality?
I Know the Stars
I know the stars by their names,
Aldebaran, Altair,
And I know the path they take
Up heaven's broad blue stair.
I know the secrets of men
By the look of their eyes,
Their gray thoughts, their strange thoughts
Have made me sad and wise.
But your eyes are dark to me
Though they seem to call and call--
I cannot tell if you love me
Or do not love me at all.
I know many things,
But the years come and go,
I shall die not knowing
The thing I long to know.
А с тобой тиха;
The Tree of Song
(Love Songs)
I sang my songs for the rest,
For you I am still;
The tree of my song is bare
On its shining hill.
For you came like a lordly wind,
And the leaves were whirled
Far as forgotten things
Past the rim of the world.
The tree of my song stands bare
Against the blue—
I gave my songs to the rest,
Myself to you.
Пламя из черноты;
Embers
(Love Songs)
I said, "My youth is gone
Like a fire beaten out by the rain,
That will never sway and sing
Or play with the wind again."
I said, "It is no great sorrow
That quenched my youth in me,
But only little sorrows
Beating ceaselessly."
I thought my youth was gone,
But you returned--
Like a flame at the call of the wind
It leaped and burned;
Threw off its ashen cloak,
And gowned anew
Gave itself like a bride
Once more to you.
A Prayer
(Love Songs)
Until I lose my soul and lie
Blind to the beauty of the earth,
Deaf though shouting wind goes by,
Dumb in a storm of mirth;
Until my heart is quenched at length
And I have left the land of men,
Oh, let me love with all my strength
Careless if I am loved again.
Найдёт себе приют и кров;
Interlude: Songs out of Sorrow
I. Spirit's House
From naked stones of agony
I will build a house for me;
As a mason all alone
I will raise it, stone by stone,
And every stone where I have bled
Will show a sign of dusky red.
I have not gone the way in vain,
For I have good of all my pain;
My spirit's quiet house will be
Built of naked stones I trod
On roads where I lost sight of God.
На истинный наставив путь;
Свою навязывать мне волю;
II. Mastery
I would not have a god come in
To shield me suddenly from sin,
And set my house of life to rights;
Nor angels with bright burning wings
Ordering my earthly thoughts and things;
Rather my own frail guttering lights
Wind blown and nearly beaten out;
Rather the terror of the nights
And long, sick groping after doubt;
Rather be lost than let my soul
Slip vaguely from my own control-
Of my own spirit let me be
In sole though feeble mastery.
III.
Тень не искать бы под сосной;
III. Lessons
Unless I learn to ask no help
From any other soul but mine,
To seek no strength in waving reeds
Nor shade beneath a straggling pine;
Unless I learn to look at Grief
Unshrinking from her tear-blind eyes,
And take from Pleasure fearlessly
Whatever gifts will make me wise--
Unless I learn these things on earth,
Why was I ever given birth?
IV. Wisdom
When I have ceased to break my wings
Against the faultiness of things,
And learned that compromises wait
Behind each hardly opened gate,
When I can look Life in the eyes,
Grown calm and very coldly wise,
Life will have given me the Truth,
And taken in exchange--my youth.
Моих останков выпьют сок;
V. In a Burying Ground
This is the spot where I will lie
When life has had enough of me,
These are the grasses that will blow
Above me like a living sea.
These gay old lilies will not shrink
To draw their life from death of mine,
And I will give my body's fire
To make blue flowers on this vine.
"O Soul," I said, "have you no tears?
Was not the body dear to you?"
I heard my soul say carelessly,
"The myrtle flowers will grow more blue."
VI. Wood Song
I heard a wood thrush in the dusk
Twirl three notes and make a star--
My heart that walked with bitterness
Came back from very far.
Three shining notes were all he had,
And yet they made a starry call--
I caught life back against my breast
And kissed it, scars and all.
VII.
VII. Refuge
From my spirit's gray defeat,
From my pulse's flagging beat,
From my hopes that turned to sand
Sifting through my close-clenched hand,
From my own fault's slavery,
If I can sing, I still am free.
For with my singing I can make
A refuge for my spirit's sake,
A house of shining words, to be
My fragile immortality.
Sonnet VII
Is love a fancy, or a feeling? No.
It is immortal as immaculate Truth,
'Tis not a blossom shed as soon as youth,
Drops from the stem of life--for it will grow,
In barren regions, where no waters flow,
Nor rays of promise cheats the pensive gloom.
A darkling fire, faint hovering o'er a tomb,
That but itself and darkness nought doth show,
It is my love's being yet it cannot die,
Nor will it change, though all be changed beside;
Though fairest beauty be no longer fair,
Though vows be false, and faith itself deny,
Though sharp enjoyment be a suicide,
And hope a spectre in a ruin bare.
If I Had But Two Little Wings
If I had but two little wings
And were a little feathery bird,
To you I'd fly, my dear!
But thoughts like these are idle things
And I stay here.
But in my sleep to you I fly:
I'm always with you in my sleep
The world is all one's own.
But then one wakes, and where am I?
All, all alone.
Song
SHE is not fair to outward view
As many maidens be,
Her loveliness I never knew
Until she smiled on me;
O, then I saw her eye was bright,
A well of love, a spring of light!
But now her looks are coy and cold,
To mine they ne'er reply,
And yet I cease not to behold
The love-light in her eye:
Her very frowns are fairer far
Than smiles of other maidens are.
No Life Vain
LET me not deem that I was made in vain,
Or that my being was an accident,
Which fate, in working its sublime intent,
Not wished to be, to hinder would not deign.
Each drop uncounted in a storm of rain
Hath its own mission, and is duly sent
To its own leaf or blade, not idly spent
'Mid myriad dimples on the shipless main.
The very shadow of an insect's wing,
For which the violet cared not while it stayed,
Yet felt the lighter for its vanishing,
Proved that the sun was shining by its shade:
Then can a drop of the eternal spring,
Shadow of living lights, in vain be made?
Потрескались губы, песок на зубах;
Замолкли пушки – покой гробовой;
И страшен Смерти немой оскал;
Облако гари стоит над ручьём;
Der Kampf um die Wasserstelle
Major Frhr. v.
Trinkt! Trinkt! und netzt euch den staubmueden Fuss
An der klaren, frischen Wasserstelle.
Wasser! Die Witbois halten es fest;
»Wasser!
Offiziere und Mannschaft sind zermetzt;
Kein Arzt. Er rafft sich vergebens empor:
»Wasser!« Er hoert nur Hoellengesang.
Durch Tag und Nacht hoehnt das Quellengegluck:
»Wasser! Ein einziger kleiner Schluck
Aus der klaren, frischen Wasserstelle!«
Da kriecht ein Sergeant, zerschossen wie er,
An seine Seite, muehsam, und lallt:
»Ein letzter Rest Rotwein, ich bring ihn her
Unserm lieben Major; nun trinkt alsbald!«
Die Quelle ruft drueben ohn Unterlass:
Kommt her zu mir, eilt an mein UEbermass,
An die klare, frische Wasserstelle!
Der Major, mit gierigem Blick, lehnt ab:
»Dank! Treuer!
Waehrend beider Qual im Durst erlischt;
Um die Quelle verzieht sich der Pulverqualm;
Von Leben und Lorbeer flutet ein Psalm
Ob der klaren, frischen Wasserstelle.
Glueckes genug
Wenn sanft du mir im Arme schliefst,
Ich deinen Athem hoeren konnte,
Im Traum du meinen Namen riefst,
Um deinen Mund ein Laecheln sonnte –
Glueckes genug.
Und wenn nach hei;em, ernstem Tag
Du mir verscheuchtest schwere Sorgen,
Wenn ich an deinem Herzen lag,
Und nicht mehr dachte an ein Morgen –
Glueckes genug.
An der Grenze
Noch fliegt die Schwalbe ein und aus
Und flitzt im Wege auf und ab.
Doch aus des Pappelbaumes Flaus
Sprang schon ein gelbes Knoepchen ab.
Noch treibt der bunte Schmetterling
Auf gruenen Wiesen hin und her.
Ein Faedchen, das am Hute hing,
Kams schon von kahlen Koppeln her?
Vereinzelt noch ein treues Wort
Und eine Freude dann und wann.
Was naehert sich, was schaukelt dort?
Die Hadesfaehre? Ankunft: wann?
Fuer und fuer
(Aus "Nebel und Sonne", 1900)
Im ersten matten Daemmer thront
Der blasse, klare Morgenmond.
Den Himmel faerbt ein kuehles Blau, ;
Der Wind knipst Perlen ab vom Tau.
Der Friede zittert: ungestuem ;
Reckt sich der Tag, das Ungetuem,
Und schuettelt sich und bruellt und beisst ;
Und zeigt uns so, was leben heisst.
Die Sonne hat den Lauf vollbracht, ;
Und Abendroete, Mitternacht.
Im ersten matten Daemmer thront ;
Der blasse, klare Morgenmond.
Und langsam frisst und frisst die Zeit ;
Und frisst sich durch die Ewigkeit.
Tod in Aehren
Im Weizenfeld, in Korn und Mohn,
liegt ein Soldat, unaufgefunden,
zwei Tage schon, zwei Naechte schon,
mit schweren Wunden, unverbunden,
durstueberquaelt und fieberwild,
im Todeskampf den Kopf erhoben.
Ein letzter Traum, ein letztes Bild,
sein brechend Auge schlaegt nach oben.
Die Sense rauscht im Aehrenfeld,
er sieht sein Dorf im Arbeitsfrieden.
Ade, ade du Heimatwelt -
und beugt das Haupt und ist verschieden.
Herbst
Die Blaetter fallen, fallen wie von weit,
als welkten in den Himmeln ferne Gaerten;
unendlich sanft in seinen Haenden haelt.
Herbsttag
Herr: es ist Zeit. Der Sommer war sehr gross
Leg Deinen Schatten auf die Sonnenuhren;
Befiehl den letzten Fruechten voll zu sein;
gieb ihnen noch zwei suedlichere Tage
draenge sie zur Vollendung hin und jage;
und wird in den Alleen hin und her;
unruhig wandern wenn die Blaetter treiben.
Вместо пламени – зола;
Только сон всё не идёт;
Злобный вихорь полон сил;
«Вот певец, вещун, пророк;
Строчкой выложены в ряд;
И не слышен шепоток;
И победы мне не надо;
The Wind over the Chimney
See, the fire is sinking low,
Dusky red the embers glow,
While above them still I cower,
While a moment more I linger,
Though the clock, with lifted finger,
Points beyond the midnight hour.
Sings the blackened log a tune
Learned in some forgotten June
From a school-boy at his play,
When they both were young together,
Heart of youth and summer weather
Making all their holiday.
And the night-wind rising, hark!
How above there in the dark,
In the midnight and the snow,
Ever wilder, fiercer, grander,
Like the trumpets of Iskander,
All the noisy chimneys blow!
Every quivering tongue of flame
Seems to murmur some great name,
Seems to say to me, "Aspire!"
But the night-wind answers, "Hollow
Are the visions that you follow,
Into darkness sinks your fire!"
Then the flicker of the blaze
Gleams on volumes of old days,
Written by masters of the art,
Loud through whose majestic pages
Rolls the melody of ages,
Throb the harp-strings of the heart.
And again the tongues of flame
Start exulting and exclaim:
"These are prophets, bards, and seers;
In the horoscope of nations,
Like ascendant constellations,
They control the coming years."
But the night-wind cries: "Despair!
Those who walk with feet of air
Leave no long-enduring marks;
At God's forges incandescent
Mighty hammers beat incessant,
These are but the flying sparks.
"Dust are all the hands that wrought;
Books are sepulchres of thought;
The dead laurels of the dead
Rustle for a moment only,
Like the withered leaves in lonely
Churchyards at some passing tread."
Suddenly the flame sinks down;
Sink the rumors of renown;
And alone the night-wind drear
Clamors louder, wilder, vaguer,—
"'T is the brand of Meleager
Dying on the hearth-stone here!"
And I answer,—"Though it be,
Why should that discomfort me?
No endeavor is in vain;
Its reward is in the doing,
And the rapture of pursuing
Is the prize the vanquished gain."
И речи их слово мёд;

Гуляли мы с тобой;
Campanula
rotundifolia.
«Ma belle cousine,
Voila, le champignon!»
Раздались за спиной;
Un boeuf!»
BIFTEK AUX CHAMPIGNONS
Mimi, do you remember —
Don't get behind your fan —
That morning in September
On the cliffs of Grand Manan;
Where to the shock of Fundy
The topmost harebells sway
(Campanula rotundi-
folia: cf. Gray)?
On the pastures high and level,
That overlook the sea,
Where I wondered what the devil
Those little things could be
That Mimi stooped to gather,
As she strolled across the down,
And held her dress skirt rather —
Oh, now, you needn't frown.
For you know the dew was heavy,
And your boots, I know, were thin:
So a little extra brevi-
ty in skirts was, sure, no sin.
Besides, who minds a cousin?
First, second, even third —
I've kissed 'em by the dozen,
And they never once demurred.
"If one's allowed to ask it,"
Quoth I, "ma belle cousine,
What have you in your basket?"
(Those baskets white and green
The brave Passamaquoddies
Weave out of scented grass,
And sell to tourist bodies
Who through Mt. Desert pass.)
You answered, slightly frowning,
"Put down your stupid book —
That everlasting Browning! —
And come and help me look.
Mushroom you spik him English,
I call him champignon:
I'll teach you to distinguish
The right kind from the wrong."
There was no fog on Fundy
That blue September day;
The west wind, for that one day,
Had swept it all away.
The lighthouse glasses twinkled,
The white gulls screamed and flew,
The merry sheep bells tinkled,
The merry breezes blew.
The bayberry aromatic,
The papery immortelles
(That give our grandma's attic
That sentimental smell,
Tied up in little brush-brooms)
Were sweet as new-mown hay.
While we went hunting mushrooms
That blue September day.
In each small juicy dimple
Where turf grew short and thick,
And nibbling teeth of simple
Sheep had browsed it to the quick;
Where roots or bits of rotten
Wood were strewed, we found a few
Young buttons just begotten
Of morning sun and dew.
And you compared the shiny,
Soft, creamy skin, that hid
The gills so pink and tiny,
To your gloves of undressed kid,
While I averred the color
Of the gills, within their sheath.
Was like — but only duller —
The rosy palms beneath.
As thus we wandered, sporting
In idleness of mind,
There came a fearful snorting
And trampling close behind;
And, with a sudden plunge, I
Upset the basketful
Of those accursed fungi,
As you shrieked, "The bull! The bull!"
And then we clung together
And faced the enemy,
Which proved to be a wether
And scared much worse than we.
But while that startled mutton
Went scampering away,
The mushrooms — every button —
Had tumbled in the bay.
The basket had a cover,
The wind was blowing stiff,
And rolled that basket over
The edges of the cliff.
It bounced from crag to boulder;
It leaped and whirled in air,
But while you clutched my shoulder
I did not greatly care.
I tried to look as rueful
As though each mushroom there
Had been a priceless truffle,
But yet I did not care.
And ever since that Sunday
On the cliffs of Grandma Nan,
High over the surf of Fundy,
I've used the kind they can.
Он Минотавра в Лабиринт навеки заковал;
В надзвёздный мир, в запретный мир, в пристанище богов;
Он летит, он поёт: без вина пьянит полёт;
Winged Man
The moon, a sweeping scimitar, dipped in the stormy straits,
The dawn, a crimson cataract, burst through the eastern gates,
The cliffs were robed in scarlet, the sands were cinnabar,
Where first two men spread wings for flight and dared the hawk afar.
There stands the cunning workman, the crafty past all praise,
The man who chained the Minotaur, the man who built the Maze.
His young son is beside him and the boy's face is a light,
A light of dawn and wonder and of valor infinite.
Their great vans beat the cloven air, like eagles they mount up,
Motes in the wine of morning, specks in a crystal cup,
And lest his wings should melt apace old Daedalus flies low,
But Icarus beats up, beats up, he goes where lightnings go.
He cares no more for warnings, he rushes through the sky,
Braving the crags of ether, daring the gods on high,
Black 'gainst the crimson sunset, golden o'er cloudy snows,
With all Adventure in his heart the first winged man arose.
Dropping gold, dropping gold, where the mists of morning rolled,
On he kept his way undaunted, though his breaths were stabs of cold,
Through the mystery of dawning that no mortal may behold.
Now he shouts, now he sings in the rapture of his wings,
And his great heart burns intenser with the strength of his desire,
As he circles like a swallow, wheeling, flaming, gyre on gyre.
Gazing straight at the sun, half his pilgrimage is done,
And he staggers for a moment, hurries on, reels backward, swerves
In a rain of scattered feathers as he falls in broken curves.
Icarus, Icarus, though the end is piteous,
Yet forever, yea, forever we shall see thee rising thus,
See the first supernal glory, not the ruin hideous.
You were Man, you who ran farther than our eyes can scan,
Man absurd, gigantic, eager for impossible Romance,
Overthrowing all Hell's legions with one warped and broken lance.
On the highest steeps of Space he will have his dwelling-place,
In those far, terrific regions where the cold comes down like Death
Gleams the red glint of his pinions, smokes the vapor of his breath.
Floating downward, very clear, still the echoes reach the ear
Of a little tune he whistles and a little song he sings,
Mounting, mounting still, triumphant, on his torn and broken wings!
На black мы поставим прощенье;
На red – свежесть юных ланит;
У инока ставка – смиренье;
Красотка поставит свой лик;
Поэта заклад – вдохновенье;
Влюбленного – жар исступленья;
Вот кайзера ставка в сраженьи;
Французов jeton – наслажденья;
Россини – аккордов сплетенье;
Де Гойи – картин колорит;
Ballade of Roulette
TO R. R.
This life--one was thinking to-day,
In the midst of a medley of fancies -
Is a game, and the board where we play
Green earth with her poppies and pansies.
Let manque be faded romances,
Be passe remorse and regret;
Hearts dance with the wheel as it dances -
The wheel of Dame Fortune's roulette.
The lover will stake as he may
His heart on his Peggies and Nancies;
The girl has her beauty to lay;
The saint has his prayers and his trances;
The poet bets endless expanses
In Dreamland; the scamp has his debt:
How they gaze at the wheel as it glances -
The wheel of Dame Fortune's roulette!
The Kaiser will stake his array
Of sabres, of Krupps, and of lances;
An Englishman punts with his pay,
And glory the jeton of France is;
Your artists, or Whistlers or Vances,
Have voices or colours to bet;
Will you moan that its motion askance is -
The wheel of Dame Fortune's roulette?
ENVOY.
The prize that the pleasure enhances?
The prize is--at last to forget
The changes, the chops, and the chances -
The wheel of Dame Fortune's roulette.
