* * *
* * *
* * *
* * *
* * *
* * *
* * *
* * *
* * *
* * *
* * *
* * *
* * *
Оставьте руку, сына приласкать;
Оставьте ногу, колыбель качать;
Дитя, коль с матерью ему не быть;
* * *

Ballad of Rozafa

AUTHOR’S NOTE
On the Balkan Peninsula, there is a national park treasured by several states. Lake Shkoder that split from the Adriatic Sea millions of years ago is now one of the most wonderful nooks of our planet. In the west and southwest, the lake is surrounded by the low forest-covered mountains, which protect it from the winds. In the east, there are picturesque swamps with white water lilies and water chestnuts. These swamps are very convenient for their inhabitants: tortoises, snakes, lizards, and otters. The friendly climate turned the lake into the shelter for hundreds of species of birds and fish. The warm water covered with blooming lotuses attracts them here. The shores of Lake Shkoder welcome pink flamingos, African herons, and curly pelicans for wintertime.
This dreamlike place has also attracted people since ancient times. On the shores of the lake and its numerous islands, many ancient buildings have remained: fortresses, churches, and cloisters. They keep old secrets of history spread by word of mouth over a glass of good wine, which is made from the grapes grown on the lakeside slopes.
The only thing bothers the local dwellers: the earth is rather unstable and movable here. It is often troubled by earthquakes, which destroy the buildings and the old sleeping mountains.
Right in the place, where the warm-water river Buna flows out of Lake Shkoder and carries its waters into the Adriatic Sea, joining the icy mountain river Drina, is a high rock. On that rock, in the third century BC, Illyrians built a fortress to protect them from forays of those who used to encroach on the lands of this paradise. A beautiful and sad legend of a lovely Rozafa and constructing the fortress with the walls still covered with white streaks, formed the basis of this ballad…
Chapter 1
Oh war, oh war, your trace is everywhere.
And scratches on the stones are like deep scars they bear.
They are the fortress’ lovely decoration…
But here, the wounds make suffer more than ever
And pale streaks are here remained forever.
That’s how the price is paid for victories of nation.
The greatest is that King who is in search
Of better life for land and all his vassals.
The wisest men around him emerge
To help him in his noble plans and battles.
And ready to assist him on that way,
To turn the earth to heaven and away,
They side by side will always have his back.
Wit, glory, wealth… King Argon did not lack.
Grey was his head, and it told everyone
That King’s long life was decent and majestic,
His deeds were so heroic and fantastic.
Illyria was proud of the wars he’d won;
In warmth, elation, and galore it flourished.
But blossoming itself can’t make the King encouraged.
The enemies were threatening him from the East;
The reason for a war is neighbor’s feast!
To save the hinterland from foes, so remorseless,
The King thought of a strong and mighty fortress.
He also knew the rightest place to build the wall:
Where rivers Kir and Drina meet, is a high rock.
Reducing foes’ invasions, all in all,
And make the fortress grow in a town’s lock.
King Argon calls his counselors at once
And leads them to the rock to have a glance.
“Just look! The whole kingdom and its borders
We see so clear in the palms of our hands.
From South, Kir and Drina will defend our lands
And near, full of animals and birds, is Shkoder.”
No better place for fortress to be built
Than on a highest rock among the boulders.
“What are your thoughts? Is that to be fulfilled?”
The wisest nodded to the royal orders
And welcomed King’s decision and campaign.
“Today, let us not waste our time in vain!
A good beginning is to hold a feast!
My youngest son, Rezar, who in the name of peace
Decided to get married… I approved
His choice of wife—admirable Rozafa!
In all the battles was his valor proved,
It’s time to have an heir—the sweetest pathos!
A joyful start is best for every issue,
And Gods are with us in this noble mission!”
So they decided. Soon, a lavish feast
Blessed newlyweds and glorified good deeds.
And happy was the folk, from West to East.
All guests raised toasts and gave young couple gifts.
And all were charmed by beauty of the bride:
Her slender stature and her eyes asparkle,
As if the stars came down to shine so bright
Into those eyes right through the night so darkened.
Only one look, and you will feel the bliss
Of jumping rashly into dark abyss.
And wives were hiding their men far from those eyes.
They knew so well, how daringly this sparkle flies.
Burns down strength of families by chance
And makes all men forget them at a glance.
And men would leave to find that very light,
That boring wives lack greatly on their side.
They celebrated, they ate gladly, they drank sweetly,
And in the morning laid the foundation neatly.
Chapter 2
Rozafa, wonderful and lovely child,
Lives with her husband in the royal castle.
It’s dull for her: here ritzy dresses shine
And everywhere huge precious stones bedazzle.
But she is pleased with sunny shining of green fields
And gloomy rocks, which are like gems unpolished.
And tired of all nasty snobbish hints,
She walks away so sad, but not astonished.
The brothers’ wives in silence hated her
For being young, strong-willed, so dreamy and sincere.
Fresh flowers in the garden she loves more:
Their kindness and galore for her so dear.
It’s all in bloom, whatever she can touch,
As if there were a gift right in her fingers.
The Mother Queen dislikes her sisters’ grudge.
Together with Rozafa, preys she whispers
To God. For King, for sons, and for the kingdom,
For husbands, heirs, folk, and for deep wisdom.
She can’t forbid her walking on her own,
But asks her to be cautious, when alone.
***
In simple dress, alone along the rock
Rozafa walks, and in her own thoughts she’s buried.
She hears so gladly the wildflowers’ talk,
Enjoys the views, so sinister and merry.
She walks around the stones all day long,
But suddenly, an old grey wizard comes along.
A court clairvoyant, he is close to King,
Advises him, and treats him, and inspires.
Rozafa, not afraid of anything,
Begins to talk to him, whom King admires.
“My greetings! Why you here, in the rocks alone,
Admirable Rozafa, lovely Princess?
Your Highness should not walk in danger on your own.
Please take a guardian with you, for instance.”
“I’m not afraid alone. Among the crowd,
It’s sultry and there are more hazards.
Among the stones, the flowers grow so proud,
But in the castle, they are dead all gathered
And people make them die in gloomy halls.
I am much happier in mountains, after all.”
“So, well. Look here, I have got some gems:
I very need them for my fortune telling.
I need your help so much to carry them—
I’ll give you necklace for that deed, I swear.”
“I need no presents. Easy on my way
I’ll help you carry them with no delay.”
She took the bag and rushed to wizard’s lands,
As if it were light feather in her hands.
“Don’t run so fast, I hardly follow you,
My legs are not so young and they walk slowly.
So, stop. Here’s my house. You are welcome, too.
Come in and drink some tea. By wizards only
It’s made. There are some mountain herbs
Which make you strong, and life will be superb!”
Rozafa thanks the wizard, takes the ladle,
And drinks to bottom, is to stop unable.
But what has happened? All is in a mess!
Her legs won’t walk, so weakened is her body.
“Oh, Wizard, save me!”
“Leave it, just say yes!
This tea will cheer us, don’t you be so naughty!
Your spouse is always busy. You don’t see him.
For him, the struggles and exploits are dear,
And no one to caress this tender skin,
Although the bliss of angel’s body’s near.
I will caress you, do the best I can.
Just have a sleep, and I will be your man.”
The spell has left at last. With all her might,
Rozafa’s running from the steep in tears.
Her movements are so fast and not quite right.
She stumbled and fell down. On her knees appears
Red blood; but pain is pushing charms away.
“God, give me strength to overcome, I pray.”
So tirelessly, to the mountain stream she ran.
And finally, exhausted, she fell down.
She washed her wounds with clean and icy water
And walked back home like wayward daughter.
Chapter 3
“Rozafa!” cry rose quickly at the court.
The Mother Queen ran up to her and hurried;
She laid her on a tiger’s skin and worried
Of what had happened, gave her much support.
“You’re shivering… Now! Keep Rozafa warm!
And light the fire! Child, were you abused?
Just say, and he will die in royal anger storm.”
“No, I just fell. Therefore my knees are bruised.”
“I’ve told you once! I’ve begged you to take care!
Somebody, go and ask Rezar to come.
His wife needs him beside her more than air.
Warm up her soul and give her some good rum!
And she’s still shivering, my poor dear child…
From now, you’ll never walk alone. Comply.”
Rezar rushed over with the Father King,
The builders on that day came down off the mountains;
They waited for some rest of everything,
And very fussy were the court surroundings.
King Argon scolded them for carelessness:
His soldiers are so safely protected,
While heirs’ mother’s lying here in helplessness,
To all the guards so strongly she objected!
“What’s wrong, my love? I hardly recognize
My lovely wife, whom I would idolize!
You look at me with eyes of a wolf cub,
When can I hear again your golden laugh?
Who was the reason? Human? Ugly beast?
Tell me, and from my anger won’t he be released!
I will behead him with my sharpest sword!
No mercy will this rascal get, I swear.”
Rezar embraced his wife and stroked her hair,
And tried to find a calming tender word.
They fell asleep just when the sunrise came,
But the upcoming day was not the same.
The walls collapsed; they heard the clarion call
And everyone could see the fortress fall.
Great clouds of dust, crash, and wail up to the sky…
They saw in ruins their fortress lie.
King Argon’s face was like white ash, so pale
When talking to his folk on town square.
He had to tell them all that they did not prevail.
His look was proud despite his deep despair.
“My good kind people, are you all alive?
Was anybody killed by earth upheaval?”
“Thanks God, we live! Three kids were given life!
Born earlier, but they are strong, not feeble.”
“God save us! We will live and praise the Lord!”
So said the King and raised his hands to heaven.
“A greatest feast we’ll make as a reward,
And our knowledge will be our weapon!
Tomorrow, at the Council, we’ll decide
How we will build a fortress. God is our guide!”
Meanwhile, all people of the land carouse.
But King wants somebody, although, to rouse.
He’s not the one, whom everyone admits,
But is the one, to whom witchcraft submits.
King’s wife, Teuna, entered the throne room,
And soon they saw the gloomy wizard loom.
“You know, what’s happened, Wizard Shepeteem?
Have stars disclosed you the mischief we’d suffered?”
“My Lord, today the heavens were like shuttered
And deaf. And wisdom of the stars is dim.
They must have heard the ground scrape last night
And did not want to say the things so right.
But heavens are not easy to appease…
Until the moon is young, I’ll on my knees
Count all the stars that on the sky will shine.
No food. No water. That’s the charge of mine.”
“It’s a reward for all your efforts here tonight!
Hey, servants! Bring a purse of gold, so big and tight!
Now, be so kind to tell me, trusty Shepeteem,
Are there any sins we must redeem?”
“Stars never say the things that can be wrong:
You have not sacrificed to Gods too long.
And if you want your fortress here for ages,
Big sacrifice can bring desired changes!”
“Big sacrifice? An animal? A bird?”
“My Lord, you have to say your own royal word!
I think Gods want a bigger sacrifice,
And if you do, the fortress is your prize.”
The King was sullen; human sacrifice
He never did, that was a too high price.
“Neither the house, not the fortress, not the hall
Is worthy this; it’s cruel, after all!”
“Not me, but stars this wisdom used to say!”
“Most likely, you have asked in vain today.
If stars demanded such a sacrifice,
Then all the humans never would suffice!”
The Mother Queen has interrupted him,
And right away became his face so grim.
“Just go away, old wizard, carry on,
You still will have some time before the dawn!”
The wizard turned around and quickly left.
King was in anger and he shook his head.
If you not want to get the King’s disgrace,
Forget to say bad things in any case.
The Council has decided: twice as thick
The fortress walls must be—consent is quick.
They’ll sacrifice a birdie and an ox,
And afterwards will start to put the blocks.
Chapter 4
The summer passes. Higher are the walls,
The work is hard and very persevering.
The fortress’ outlines are vivid on the earth,
Its towers—miracle of engineering—
Have risen to let enemies know well:
If they search profit, they will find the hell!
***
Rozafa’s laughter, musical and merry,
Is sounding again in royal halls and gardens;
She is more careful now, and a strong guardian
Is close to her; he’s like a shield defending.
He’s at her service and he is at hand,
Although she never leaves the royal land.
Her spouse is happy, and the Mother Queen
Began to notice in her eyes so clean
That Milky Way inside them could be seen,
Although a wonder it might really seem.
Her husband loves her! So does Father King.
They give her presents, gems and diamond rings.
Rezar writes poems, sings the songs for her.
No wonder that so jealous sisters were.
Oh, envy! You can wither someone’s soul,
When all the feelings are beyond control.
***
Rezar is tired, but he’s running fast
To see his dear turtledove at last.
“Rozafa, darling, sunshine of my life!
Where were you, tell me, for the heavens’ sake?”
“I hid from other people’s prying eyes
And walked under the rock, beside the lake.”
“Who did you meet? And who did come you by?”
“I met a strong magnificent young deer.
He came to drink, but suddenly got shy.
He was a glimpse, and then he disappeared.
He was so lovely, graceful forest cub!
I so much wanted just to feed him up…”
The Sun woke up, and warm was its first ray.
Rezar is dressed and ready for a brand-new day.
“Rozafa, look! It’s someone it the yard
And seems like walking now among the trees!”
“That very deer! It’s him, Rezar, look, please!”
“To bring the God here would not be too hard
For me, if that were just a wish for you.
My angel! Let me make your dreams come true!
My precious treasure! Let us have a son.
For him this mighty fortress I’ve begun.
And let him grow in here, being safe,
To later lead the army, strong and brave.”
“And if we have a daughter?”
“Will be great!
These walls for her protection we create!
They must secure the lives of these two pearls,
The loving mother and her little girl.”
“How lovely! Words of yours console me more
Than all expensive presents I was given.
Unbind the deer, please, darling, I implore,
And let him go. It is the way to save him.
He’ll suffer in captivity this way…
I’ll feed him. Tear the ropes and let him run away!”
***
And how’s the wizard doing? Didn’t give up dreams
And in his tent, obsessed with his delusions,
He’s cherishing his pain and for supreme
Desire he is craving in confusion.
Began to come more often to the court,
Not asking, if King needed him or not,
To have his help to rule his own land,
Or give his army order or command.
The Mother Queen has seen the wizard’s zeal
And ordered the backdoor then to unseal
Lest he the gardens shamelessly invade
And try to tempt some young and careless maid.
He wished to see at least Rozafa’s trace…
Her smell, her face, her shadow he would chase.
He makes a fire in a dark long night.
A prayer skull is here to enhance his might.
He adds ingredients into his magic pot:
Some poisons, teeth of wolf, and a big toad.
A viper’s tongue he mixed with dung of rats
And, ready for the spell, began his chants.
He cut some herb with deeply poisoned root
And danced all night as madly as he could.
He dances like a wrathful fiend in hell,
His movements paint the outlines of spell.
And in the darkness, flames so animate
Are playing on the witchcraft amulets.
Till morning, he did not stop to jump,
Until against the dusty floor he bumped.
The fire’s gone. Now, strength the wizard has.
Then a transparent flash, a blue topaz
Full of white blinks, shot up into the sky
And everybody heard the poor earth cry.
And then it cried some more, much more, and more…
The wizard laughed like never did before.
***
The rain had washed away the dust from every stone,
And mercilessly were the ruins shown.
No one was dead, but people were afraid,
Repined at destiny, they moaned, groaned, prayed…
Gods do not want this fortress, they all thought,
If King rejects to sacrifice what he has got.
They were to carry stones on mountaintop,
And blood from deep old wounds would hardly stop.
But when the King appeared before the folk,
They all bowed down and listened as he spoke.
“The destiny is trying us again;
And though its cruel games we do deplore,
It’s not the thing for men to cry and blame.
I will express my gratitude once more
For letting all my people stay alive,
Though stones are broken, let the kingdom thrive!”
His speech was short. He let his vassals go,
But ordered his wise men to stay in, though.
“Get ready for Grand Council and decide,
How fortress must be from collapses fortified!”
He made them think till morning, and then went
To meet the wizard, which had left his tent.
With gloomy divination of the rune,
The wizard entered the throne hall quite soon.
“You feel unwell, Prophetic Shepeteem?
You’re burning up in fever, you’re so pale!”
“My Lord, this time I will not let you fail.
You must have heard today your people scream.
And most of them were ready to uprise!
I’m scared for you,” such were the wizards’ lies.
“I’m much obliged, my friend. Now, say to us,
What do we have to do this time for Gods?
What kind of present do we have to make
To save the fortress from the next earthquake?
To make it stand for long and troubled times,
What does my kingdom have to sacrifice?”
“It’s all the same. But Gods became unkind,
Because their first demand you had declined.
Not only gifts are needed, big and nice,
They claim from you a bigger sacrifice!
More precious, than the life of Autocrat,
As if you tore a piece out of your heart!”
Teuna, being an obedient wife,
Avoided taking part in such a strife,
But interfered now to make the trouble stop:
“If killing humans is a decent job,
Both Gods and humans still are not aware.
Talk to the stars once more, just if you dare.”
Although the King this time did not oppose,
Under Teuna’s gaze the wizard froze.
And beaten for his cunning more than once,
He tried to quickly vanish from her glance.
***
“Teuna, these destructions do no good.
My folk are tired and are grumbling now.
And by them all, I am misunderstood.
They want a sacrifice from me, somehow.
Why did you let the mighty wizard go?
My land I value more than life, you know.
You want a weakened kingdom? It won’t do.
You are a wife and mother, but it won’t be you
Who will be counting fundamental loss
And all the victims murdered in the wars!
If your folk suffer, what does one life mean?”
“My Lord, your hard decision I have long foreseen:
To choose for sacrifice the proper victim,
I know for sure, that you will choose yourself,
Because your kingdom really needs your help
To stop earthquakes, like planets are predicting.
Let’s wait. Remember, like it was last time?
By morning, Gods have fully changed their mind.”
“Teuna, wife of mine, you are so smart,
So kind, so strong, and have a golden heart!
You know your husband better than he does!
I’ll do what you have said, and have a rest at last.
In your strong intuition I believe.
And let the morning bring us all relief!”
***
But when at last the nighty darkness came,
Teuna left the castle with some aim.
The guards beside her on a narrow path;
Among the mountains they are walking fast.
Here’s the wizard’s tent. There is a light inside.
“Wait here!” she said and vanished in the night.
“Have you been waiting for me, Shepeteem?”
“Your Majesty, you speak so cleverly!
I really have; I trust my memory.
You see the things, for people left unseen.
Why are you standing? Please, sit down, my guest!”
“No, wizard, I’m here not to have a rest.
And if I only stay here for too long,
The loop around your neck will be so quick and strong.
Now, look and listen! I can see your thrill
Of noble royal blood you want to spill.”
“It’s not the royal blood…”
“It is, I know!
You met the girl, who finally said no
And who left safe despite your potions’ spell.
Is there any lie that you would like to tell?
I saw you gazing at Rozafa, yes.
I see it clear: with her you are obsessed.”
“Teuna, never I could lie to you…
Do you recall the times, when we used to…”
“It’s useless to recall forgotten times.
But you must know: the King will sacrifice
Himself. But he will never kill the one
Who soon will have an heir, a royal son!
You’d better think about it more than twice
When to the King you tell of sacrifice.”
She said these words and quickly went away,
Her Majesty, the Queen so posh and brave.
And in the morning, pantheon of Gods
Wished just a herd of cows and an ox.
With such a sacrifice, the King was pleased.
Thanks to the Queen, results had been achieved.
King’s counselors would finally intend
To build the fortress using tough cement.
The angry wizard left into exile
To live like hermits, on a lonely isle,
And learn to hear better “what stars say.”
He waved his cloak and disappeared that way.
Chapter 5
The autumn comes. The wind becomes so cold.
Exhausted workers do not stop to scold.
They’re tired. And the enemies’ attacks
Are torturing Illyria. So hard!
The great despair is about to start.
And corpses overfill the creaky carts
That roll the mountain down day by day.
The King roams through his chambers weak and pale.
“They tell me that a weird somber stranger
Is peeving and annoying our crowd.
He says that all their lives are in great danger,
Their children will be slaves, he says out loud.
He says, my elder sons, Luann and Phatos,
Exhausted all the neighbors with their forays:
They rampage and are full of senseless pathos,
And tell grandiloquent, high-flown war stories.
They raise all men to fight and call the army.
It’s what the wise say, and it can’t be blarney.”
“Yes, our sons should play those games no longer
And over their bad deeds we both must ponder. “
“It’s time for our children to mature
And then, at last, their own heirs to secure.
I used to grow them like exotic fruit;
No wonder they’ve grown up so dissolute!
I used to give them power and protection,
My hopes are dead now. It’s my love’s reflection.
When Father wishes best for all his sons
And wishes them to change from boys to men,
He teaches them, how Kingdom must be run,
But doesn’t coddle them again, again, again!”
“My dear, they also say around the kingdom,
This weird stranger is so much the same
As Shepeteem, which wished to be a pilgrim
In steppes…”
“My Queen, you’d better now disclaim
Bad memories of dim and distant past.
No matter who he is, when grief is in my land.
If it is him who has come back at last
And if there is a bigger sacrifice demand,
I surely will do it. If Gods are willing
To see the royal blood on fortress walls,
Just don’t dispute about it, and don’t brawl!
And let us take it as a mercy killing.”
“My Lord, I do not want to hear a word!
Why do you still believe this mean impostor?
And don’t you think all his ideas are absurd?
He wished us evil, not the land to prosper!
In evil dances, he summoned King of Hell.
I’ve heard what many people used to tell.”
“Teuna, people trust him, they are helpless.
We have to give them much support and credence.
The wizard or not him, we are defenseless
In misery, and people hold their grievance.
And if that sacrifice makes Gods awakened,
If they of our land would disremember,
I swear to you, my precious wife, I’ll make it
And let my kingdom live in godlike splendor!”
“My King! I live when only loving you
And I don’t need this world without you.
And if the King decides to end his life,
He can’t forget to take his loving wife
With him.”
He turned around to her.
“My Queen!
I know exactly what you really mean.
And no magicians could compare to you
In your deep wisdom and your noble courage.
By only you I’ve always been encouraged
And till the end of days, I love you, too.
My Goddess! Neither wealth, nor gold, nor castles,
Nor power, nor the sons, nor bows, nor glory,
But you’re my bliss and blessing for the vassals.
You are my gift and endless adoration story!
What a responsibility to rule!
Not everyone can carry such a burden...
Rezar is young, but he will grow for certain
And won’t surrender to the life so cruel!
He will be strong enough to do his duty
And then, his power will be undisputed.
But now, we do not have another lord
Except the one that used to hold that sword.
And it is you, Teuna, Mother Queen,
And you will rule this heavy Realm Machine
In case I go. Accept it. No objection.
I feel there will be soon a new earthquake
And our losses will be really great.
The Queen bowed down not thinking of rejection.
Chapter 6
And once again came tremor of the earth…
The walls were swallowed fiercely by the chasm,
And many of the workers were then hurt,
And everybody lost their enthusiasm.
Thus, all the kingdom’s vassals were dismayed.
High price in human lives was fully paid.
They gathered at the town square, all displeased.
The King appeared, grumpy and diseased.
Was ready for the greatest sacrifice that time,
But was by words of wizard left behind.
When Shepeteem was entering the gate,
The people quickly finished their debate.
Submissively and fast, they moved aside.
He seemed to float down the river, calm and wide.
But many of the people noticed, though:
His bow before the King was not too low.
“My Shepeteem, you have come back in time!
The life of ours has become severe,
We need your help… I think the end is near.
Reveal the truth and give us all a sign!
So, have you learned to hear the will of Gods?
Do, please, tell us how to deal with heavy odds.
Say, what to do: give up or build again?
Stay on the rock or settle on a plain?”
“Along the steppes I used to vagabond,
To fly like migrant birdies I have learned.
I went to mountains, heard the sounds of earth,
And flew like eagles over Universe.
I’ve learned to move like deepest rivers flow
And shine like seven-colored rainbows glow.
I’ve learned to crawl into the earth like worms,
And afterwards up to the sun to grow.
The heavy fire taught me how to burn
And how to warm and cherish in return.
And if you want to realize the truth,
Forget about the feeling you call ruth.”
“You’ve made so many revelations, friend.
So tell me, what do planets recommend?”
“Oh, now I know the stars’ capricious mood:
They’re tired of the humans’ attitude,
Of the requests that they to heavens send
Day after day, however, there’s no end.
The stars can tell them anything by guess,
But humans will just die of happiness.
So when I got like equal to the earth
And recognized it what that skill was worth,
Immediately I was told by Gods
The answer to the questions your land asks.
But firstly, after torments you have faced,
What kind of fortress must be here placed?”
“I want, at first, that nothing could destroy it,
So that the enemies and wars avoid it.
And let it be by godlike powers saved,
Protecting us from every massive raid!”
“Now, listen. You may easily retreat
And leave the fortress: every King’s decision
Is good, no matter, winning or defeat.
But you still need the fortress, that’s your vision.
My Lord, Illyria, too, needs this fortress,
Gods told me this themselves last night exactly.
But now this sacrifice can’t be so thoughtless
Just like it used to be before that, lastly.
Last time you sacrificed some little thing.
Do you believe that it will bring the win?
Gods do not want this kind of charity,
If you are asking for prosperity!
Gods really want the most precious gift.”
“I’ll sacrifice myself, and I insist.”
So said the King and took a step ahead.
“No,” unexpectedly the wizard said.
“My Lord, just listen, what the stars have prompted
And you will know, who is the victim wanted:
She comes quite often to the royal hall…
And it is she to be immured in the wall!
The fortress will then stay unbreakable for ages.
But this nice lovely girl must be much more than precious
For both the King and Queen, just like a daughter.
She must be young; her blood has to be hotter.
She will protect the kingdom as a mighty guard.
Don’t hesitate, my Lord, although it is too hard.”
The King went slowly to the throne hall.
He felt unwell and was about to fall.
He ordered all the rest to go away
And asked just his three sons with him to stay.
“You heard exactly what this man had told.
The irritated folk will make revolt
If we’re unable to protect the land
And make it poorer, on the other hand.
What’s happened to the Gods, it is unclear.
Their sentence is extremely severe.
But we may not, of course, declare a protest:
We’ll sacrifice the ones, which are the best.
They want to take away from us the one,
Who’s greatly loved by us and everyone.
You know, I was not blessed with daughters, sadly.
That’s why I love your wives so madly,
As if they were the daughters of my own.
I used to love and make them feel at home.
Now, each of them has recently become
A caring, tender, and attentive mom.
They gave me grandsons—happiness for years.
To sacrifice them? How? My soul in tears!
For which of them the rock will be a tomb?
How can I choose the one who will be doomed?
Look, Phatos, your Aelleera’s voice is sweet.
Without her songs, my life is incomplete.
What if we lose this lovely angel’s voice?
No way! And I will never make this choice.
Luann, your wife Danita’s slender stature
Is blessed and gifted by the Mother Nature.
She charms all people in an unfamiliar line
And all agree that her court dancing is divine.
I’ll never put her into a deep grave!
Her magic dancing I’m obliged to save.
Rezar, Rozafa’s like a child of mine.
Into this palace, she has come to shine
With all her beauty and her sweetest temper.
I have no right to kill the girl so tender.
I’ll never make her future dark and gloom,
But have to let her gorgeous beauty bloom!
And if I hesitate so much again,
Let the blind fate decide all this for them.
Who’ll be the one to break the fortress curse?
Let it be her, who will tomorrow come in first.”
The King then gestured to his sons to leave.
They left the hall and were so deep in grief.
So devastated were the King’s three sons
By thoughts of turning into wifeless ones.
It was like sharpest knives in their young hearts.
But how could they say no to will of Gods?
Son Phatos ordered his admired Aelleera
To say that she had bout of fever,
Forbade her entering the throne hall,
And told her not to talk about this at all.
Danita then was ordered by Luann
To stay in bedroom and obey her man,
And not to leave the chambers till the night,
And tell the servants that her mother would arrive.
He said, “Do not retell my words to anyone!
Just silence makes successful outcome.”
Rezar has told Rozafa in a strong firm voice
That in the morning, King will make his choice
And their fate will be at last decided,
When Father King is ready to give judgment.
He said this and could stay inside no more.
He left her in her room and shut the door.
And he would sit on a high rock till morning sun,
Repenting there was nothing to be done.
He saw it clear that he was at bay.
But he could never break his promise or betray.
And when the rising sun has shown its first ray,
Rezar stood up and slowly went away.
He felt so reckless and completely burdened,
But led his way decidedly to hear the verdict.
The King, the Queen, the brothers have just come.
They all kept silence as if they were all dumb.
The wizard came, was bloodless like a chalk.
He sat aside and couldn’t start to talk.
The King had also one more sleepless night…
Immediately, when the morning light
Began to gleam on the gigantic rock,
They heard along the hall Rozafa walk.
With baby in her arms, she quietly came in.
The boy was sleeping, having a sweet dream.
Her smile was greeting gladly the new day.
She did not see that her man’s face became so pale.
Rezar cried out and ran away in fear.
He did not want the King to see his tears.
“My lovely child, why have you come so early?”
King Argon asked.
“When future is so blurry
That our people must be sacrificed,
No time to sleep. And when I saw Sun rise,
I came to you, not wasting time in vain.
I want to know, what judgment we will gain.”
The King, severe but pale, said what was destined:
“Rozafa, it is you who’s been selected!”
Perplexed, she cuddled her small son so tightly.
She saw her destiny so clear and rightly
And straightly looked into the ruthless eyes
Of those who made this cruel sacrifice.
The eyes of Argon, honest and direct…
The eyes of wizard, who became half dead.
Rozafa’s look just stabbed him in the heart.
He would be happy to be far apart,
But was defeated in that little war.
He leaned against the throne and then fell on the floor.
Her brothers hid their eyes, all in disgrace…
The Queen, with tears streaming down her face,
Came up to her and took her son away.
“I will take care of him,“ she had to say.
“So if this gloomy choice is now my fate,
I’ll die for kingdom’s sake. It just can’t wait.
It is my duty now to let the land survive.
But I implore you, keep my son alive!
It’s not his fault that he has lost the bliss
To feel his mother’s warmth and feel her kiss.
Please leave my fingers free to pat him on the head
And free my leg to rock his little bed.
And leave my breast so I can breastfeed
My poor baby. That is all I plead.
Why did you freeze? Come on, and do it fast!
And make my pain come to an end, at last!”
Rozafa opened the old castle gate
And met the ending of her somber fate.
She shouted out to all:
“Good afternoon!
Rejoice! The sacrifice is coming soon!”
***
There is a giant rock where two rivers meet.
And on that rock, there is a mighty fortress.
It never knew earthquakes or a defeat.
Foes don’t attack it, and its might is spotless.
It knows no treachery or jealousy,
Defends the land from evil on the earth.
Like loving mother, who has given birth
And left us her immortal legacy.
Down these grey walls, into the foaming brine
White river’s flowing through the years and time.
